The OHBA Job Ready Program is training the next generation of construction workers

The “OHBA Job Ready difference” may apply to many aspects of the program, but none more so than our emphasis on training entry-level workers for practical, hands-on work in residential construction. Before we match eager program participants with residential construction employers across Ontario, we provide the hands-on training in the areas that they’ll need to be successful on the job site sooner than the average entry-level worker.

The OHBA Job Ready Program Training Components

The OHBA Job Ready Program provides a list of pre-trained candidates who have already completed the necessary courses so that you can spend more time helping them learn new skills and less time teaching them the basics.

All participants in the program must complete the following training courses to complete the program:

  • Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Training (which includes The Basics of PPE, WHMIS 2015 & GHS, Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Hazard Awareness, and Workplace Violence and Harassment)
  • Working at Heights and Elevated Platform
  • Intro to Residential Construction
  • Hands-on Tools Training
  • House Construction 101

Training that goes above and beyond to Level Up

Program participants may also complete the Level Up Program within the OHBA Job Ready Program. In this hands-on 4-week home renovation skills intensive, participants learn how to frame a full room with electrical and plumbing rough-ins.

Why hands-on training in entry-level residential construction is important

For employers, having a pipeline of entry-level workers who already possess the basic training to work on site is a game changer. Gone will be the days of recruiting entry level talent and hoping for the best — OHBA Job Ready Program employees are well-prepared and ready to work on your job sites from day one.

Because of this emphasis on hands-on training, employers can reap the benefits of:

  • Shorter new employee onboarding timelines
  • A more confident and safety-conscious entry-level workforce
  • Workers with potential for advancement
  • Higher retention rates

Since OHBA Job Ready Program employees adapt to the job site sooner than the average entry-level worker, they’re in a position to eventually take on more responsibility as well. When you invest in hiring these entry-level workers, you have the potential to build a strong foundation for your future team as well.
